John Frederick named interim dean for UTSA College of Sciences

FEBRUARY 27, 2024 — UTSA Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Heather Shipley today announced the appointment of John Frederick as interim dean of the UTSA College of Sciences while a national search for a permanent dean is conducted. Frederick will assume duties as dean on March 9, 2024.

Frederick, a professor in the UTSA Department of Chemistry, joined the university in February 2008 as provost and vice president for academic affairs, serving in that position until 2016. Additionally, he has served as interim vice president for research (2012–2013) and as chair of the Department of Mathematics (2018–2019).

Before joining UTSA, Frederick spent more than 20 years at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he served as a chemistry faculty member, department chair and, from 2001 to 2007, as executive vice president and provost.

“After careful consideration of nominations from College of Sciences faculty and staff, Dr. Frederick emerged as a highly accomplished candidate to guide the college through this transitional phase,” said Shipley. “His extensive administrative experience, along with his track record of leadership and commitment to our university, make him exceptionally well suited to lead the college during this pivotal time, and I am thankful for his readiness to take on this role.”
