Number of Raptor Engines and Power of Starship Heavy Rockets

April 7, 2024 | by The Jeuns

SpaceX’s Starship is a marvel of engineering, requiring an immense amount of thrust to launch into space. The Raptor engines used for this task are incredibly powerful, with each engine generating 230 tons of force. To propel the Starship, a total of 33 Raptor engines are used, collectively producing 7,590 tons of force to lift the spacecraft and booster off the ground.

For comparison, the GEnx-2B Engine that powers a Boeing 747-8 only creates 66,500 pounds of thrust, significantly less than the 507,063 pound-force each Raptor engine generates. However, SpaceX didn’t stop there. In May 2023, Elon Musk announced the Raptor V3, which boasts even more thrust, reaching 269 tons per engine. This enhancement increased the Super Heavy Booster’s total thrust to 8,877 tons or 19.5 million pounds.

Additionally, the Raptor Vacuum engines, with larger exhaust and expansion nozzles, offer increased efficiency and thrust, especially in space. Producing 258 tons of force each, the three RVac engines provide Starship with 774 tons of force after separation in space.

The constant innovation and improvement of SpaceX’s engines showcase the company’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of space travel. With these powerful engines at their disposal, the possibilities for further exploration and advancements in space technology are endless.
