We started with the idea to advance LA as a bioscience ecosystem by showcasing the best research across the LA academic institutions. In 2023, I can say that this has greatly exceeded expectations. We are in a growth stage and it’s exciting for Los Angeles.

UCLA Technology Development Group (UCLA TDG) presents the Los Angeles Bioscience Ecosystem Summit ‘23 (LABEST, pronounced L-A Best). This event is the premier showcase for bioscience innovation in Southern California. With national and international presenters and attendees and a true collaboration with colleagues from across LA county, LABEST presents promising academic research, entrepreneurial faculty investigators, and local startup companies. The goal is to highlight the vibrant startup ecosystem and promote awareness of the growing life science entrepreneurial ecosystem in Los Angeles to facilitate partnerships between academia, the biopharma industry, entrepreneurs and investors.

“This year’s LABEST conference will feature a welcome by Chancellor Block followed by a fireside chat with UC Board of Regents Chair Richard Leib and Regent Lark Park. The Chancellor and the Regents will discuss the significance of innovation and entrepreneurship at the University and how it propels its mission of service. We are also honored to host the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr. Daren Tang.”, said Amir Naiberg, Associate Vice Chancellor, CEO & President, UCLA TDG (Technology Development Group).

UCLA TDG is excited to fill the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center once again for the 2023 event, which will be held on May 25, 2023. Throughout the summit, faculty members present the latest scientific breakthroughs, which may lead to the critical therapies of tomorrow. Leading bioscience translational research programs and startups will be showcased where Southern California Institutions have significant expertise, pioneering research and resource commitments to develop innovative patient therapies.

LABEST is led by Mark Wisniewski, Senior Director, BioPharmaceuticals, UCLA TDG. He adds, “We are on our 5th year of the LABEST conference at UCLA. We started with the idea to advance LA as a bioscience ecosystem by showcasing the best research across the LA academic institutions. In 2023, I can say that this has greatly exceeded expectations as this event has attracted the participation of stakeholders from research programs, incubators, biomanufacturing facilities, investment funds, startups and biopharma. We are in a growth stage of the ecosystem and it’s exciting for Los Angeles.”
