Carbon dioxide is a major contributor to global warming, with about two-thirds of all earth-warming greenhouse gases coming from fossil fuels, according to the United Nations Climate Program. To address this issue, one potential solution is carbon capture, a process that involves storing carbon underground.

Interest in carbon capture projects is on the rise across the country, including in Kern County, California, which is known for its oil production. As the state’s top producer of oil, Kern County is looking to transition to becoming a center for the carbon capture industry.

But how effective is carbon capture technology in combating climate change? And how safe is it for the communities surrounding these projects?

These questions are part of the ongoing conversation around Remaking America, a collaboration with six public radio stations across the country. This initiative is funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Overall, the push for carbon capture technology represents a promising step towards reducing carbon emissions and combatting climate change.
